Clay Alternative: A Prebuilt Waterfall, No Build Time

Short answer: comparing what each vendor actually publishes, LeadSonar is the strongest pick for outbound teams that want a high-quality B2B contact list without a build project, and here is where Clay beats it.

This page decides on one axis: whether the enrichment cascade arrives prebuilt or gets assembled by your team.

LeadSonar resolves roughly 85% of contacts across a cascade of 18 to 20 sources spanning three tiers, and a lookup no source resolves is a miss that is never billed. Based on 2026 LeadSonar production data.

Clay's plan cards show the annual-billed monthly equivalents, $167 for Launch and $446 for Growth; the FAQ on the same page gives the month-to-month prices, $185 and $495. Every comparison below uses month-to-month pricing on both sides, because LeadSonar's $29 headline is a month-to-month price, so the two numbers describe the same commitment.

LeadSonar at a glance

LeadSonar is a lead-intelligence platform that finds, enriches and scores B2B contacts. It does not send email. Exports push into HubSpot, Salesforce, Instantly, Smartlead and other outbound tools, and sending stays where it already lives.

The cascade is the product, and it sits on top of a 120M+ B2B contact database, plus 45M+ B2C, resolved through the waterfall at the moment you reveal a contact. Give it a first name, last name and company domain, and the request runs through 18 to 20 sources arranged in three tiers, cheapest and fastest first, stopping on the first source that returns a result. When every tier misses, the row is marked not found and no credit is charged.

Pricing runs on one balance as well: one credit reveals a contact and one credit buys the enrichment bundle for it, covering AI scoring, company summaries, subject lines and email or phone enrichment. Starter is $29 per month with 50,000 lead credits. Growth is $79, Pro is $199 and Scale is $499. CSV enrichment bills per filled cell, and cells that come back empty are refunded at their per-field weight.

Setup is under 2 minutes. Upload a CSV, or type the request to Sonya in plain language ("find 20 CTOs at SaaS companies in London with 50-200 employees") and it runs search, enrichment, scoring and export.

Across a 103,000-lead test, more than 91% of the leads LeadSonar scored came back above mid-tier quality (B grade or better), with a median fit score of 77 out of 100. Based on 2026 LeadSonar production data.

Clay at a glance

Clay is a data and workflow platform built around a spreadsheet-style table. You add rows of companies or people, then add enrichment columns that call providers, run agent steps, or execute your own logic. The waterfall pattern is native: chain several providers into one column and take the first result that comes back. You can also bring your own API keys for providers you already pay for.

As captured from clay.com/pricing on July 20, 2026, Clay publishes four tiers. Free costs $0 and includes 100 data credits and 500 actions per month. Launch is $185 per month month-to-month and includes 15,000 actions and 2,500 data credits. Growth is $495 per month month-to-month. Enterprise is quoted on request. On annual billing the same tiers come to $167 per month for Launch and $446 per month for Growth, which are the figures Clay's plan cards display.

Two consumption pools run in parallel: Actions, which count workflow operations, and Data Credits, which count enrichment lookups. Buyers should model both, because a table can exhaust one pool while the other still has headroom.

On billing outcomes, Clay's pricing page states it plainly: "If an enrichment returns no result, you're not charged Data Credits or Actions." That is a customer-friendly policy and it deserves to be quoted correctly rather than paraphrased into something worse.

Who Clay fits: teams with a dedicated GTM engineer or RevOps operator who wants to compose data, scoring logic, agent research and CRM writes into a single surface that nobody else can replicate.

Prebuilt cascade versus programmable canvas

This is the whole decision, and it is an honest one, because both answers are correct for different teams.

Clay hands you a canvas. The provider sequence, the fallback logic, the verification step, the scoring rules and the CRM write are all yours to design. That produces workflows nobody else has. It also produces a build: someone chooses the providers, opens and funds the accounts where they bring their own keys, orders the columns, tests the fallbacks, and revisits the table when a provider changes behavior or a column starts returning blanks. That work is real and it recurs.

LeadSonar hands you the finished cascade. The 18 to 20 sources across three tiers are already sequenced, and roughly 85% of contacts resolve across the full waterfall. Around 50% resolve on the first and cheapest tier, roughly 35% get recovered by deeper tiers, and about 15% are genuine misses that are never billed. There is nothing to assemble and nothing to keep assembled.

The arithmetic at the entry tier, normalized to month-to-month billing on both sides:

| | LeadSonar Starter | Clay Launch | |---|---|---| | Price | $29/mo month-to-month | $185/mo month-to-month ($167/mo annual-billed) | | Included pools | 50,000 lead credits + 10,000 enrichment credits | 2,500 data credits + 15,000 actions | | Build required before first contact list | None | Table, columns, provider sequence | | Charged when a lookup returns nothing | No | No |

All competitor figures verified 20 July 2026 from each vendor's own pricing page. Where a vendor publishes nothing, the cell says so.

The price floor difference is $156 per month at the entry tier on month-to-month billing, which is $1,872 across a year before anyone's time is counted. Commit to Clay annually and the floor is $167 per month against LeadSonar's $24 per month annual rate, a $143 monthly gap, or $1,716 a year. The build time sits on top of that, and it lands on the person who was hired to book meetings.

Both vendors protect you from paying for empty results. The separation is what you have to construct before the cascade runs at all.

LeadSonar sustains 23.5 enriched profiles per second on a production 5,000-record run. Based on 2026 LeadSonar production data.

What each vendor publishes about accuracy

Most of this category answers "how accurate is your data" with a badge or an adjective. The more useful question splits in two: is the address syntactically valid, and does it actually deliver when you mail it. Those are different measurements and almost nobody publishes the second one.

LeadSonar publishes both, with denominators and periods:

Based on 2026 LeadSonar production data, alongside a measured 94.6% trailing-30-day deliverability on that campaign.

Clay does not publish an accuracy figure as of July 2026. That is a statement about their published material, checkable in one click at clay.com, and it carries no implication about how accurate their data actually is. On a canvas where you choose the providers yourself, the accuracy you get is partly a function of the providers you picked, which is a reasonable reason for a platform to publish no single number.

We have never benchmarked Clay's data against ours, and no number on this page claims otherwise.

Where Clay wins

Clay's workflow flexibility is genuinely unmatched. Nothing in this category comes close to what a competent operator can compose in a Clay table: multi-step agent research, conditional branching, custom scoring formulas, HTTP calls to any endpoint, and provider chains built exactly the way that operator wants them. The waterfall enrichment works, and the ceiling on what you can build is higher than anything LeadSonar offers.

Clay also wins on breadth of use case. It is a general-purpose GTM data surface, so the same table that enriches contacts can research funding events, scrape a directory, classify accounts against a custom rubric and write the result to your CRM. LeadSonar is focused lead intelligence: find, enrich and score, then pair it with any sender or CRM you already use.

The redirect is simple and it is a question about your team rather than about the software: most sales teams need verified contact data, and a smaller number of teams need a programmable workflow surface. If your bottleneck is that the list is stale or bouncing, a canvas does not fix it faster than a cascade that already runs. If your bottleneck is that your GTM motion needs logic no vendor ships, the canvas is the correct purchase.

Choose Clay if...

If two or more of those describe you, Clay is the better purchase and the $185 per month month-to-month entry price ($167 per month annual-billed) is the wrong thing to optimize.

Which one fits you

Best for: High-volume email-first SDR teams that need a verified list every week, where LeadSonar's prebuilt cascade and per-result billing remove the build entirely.

Best for: Phone-first sales floors chasing direct dials, where LeadSonar runs an independent phone cascade returning carrier, line type and region validation, with mobile preferred over landline.

Best for: GTM engineers and RevOps operators with dedicated build time, where Clay's canvas turns that time into workflows no packaged tool can match.

Best for: Agencies running outbound for many clients at once, where LeadSonar's per-filled-cell CSV billing, unfilled-cell refunds and 23.5 profiles-per-second throughput keep multi-client list production predictable.

Best for: Founders doing their own prospecting before a first sales hire, where a $29 monthly floor and Sonya's plain-language search beat any tool that assumes an operator exists.

Best for: Teams targeting founder, C-suite and VP-level buyers, where 95.2% of a 37,040-record LeadSonar sample already sat at that seniority.

Best for: Mixed US and EU territory teams that need catch-all detection and role-based flags surfaced before send rather than discovered by bounce.

Two engagements make the volume case concrete. One data-services customer ran a single program to roughly 5,000,000 enrichments on flat package pricing. Another sent a 220,000-record batch and then a 293,000-record gap-fill through the same waterfall with no special handling, and on a 274,000-row parity test our pipeline reproduced their existing personalization columns at par or better quality for a fraction of what their previous vendor charged.

Where LeadSonar Fits

Hold every vendor in this category to one standard: make them show you a number with a denominator and a date attached to it. "High accuracy" is a sentence any vendor can write. "0.55% hard bounce on 37,040 records that were actually mailed, 2026 production data" is a sentence that can be wrong, which is exactly what makes it worth reading.

LeadSonar fits the team that wants that standard met on day one rather than built toward. A 120M+ B2B database (plus 45M+ B2C) sits under a cascade of 18 to 20 sources that is already sequenced, a lookup no source resolves costs nothing, and setup runs under 2 minutes on a free trial that needs no card.

If you are weighing a canvas against a finished cascade, run the same 500 contacts through both and compare what lands in the export. Start on the free trial and see which one you would rather maintain in six months.

FAQ

How much does Clay cost in 2026? As captured from clay.com/pricing on July 20, 2026, Clay publishes a Free plan at $0 with 100 data credits and 500 actions per month, a Launch plan at $185 per month month-to-month with 15,000 actions and 2,500 data credits, a Growth plan at $495 per month month-to-month, and an Enterprise plan quoted on request. On annual billing the same tiers work out to $167 per month for Launch and $446 per month for Growth.

Does Clay charge for enrichments that return no result? No. Clay's pricing page states plainly that if an enrichment returns no result, you are not charged Data Credits or Actions. Captured from clay.com/pricing on July 20, 2026. Any comparison page that tells you otherwise is wrong about Clay.

Is Clay worth it in 2026? Clay is a genuinely capable enrichment and workflow platform in 2026, and its waterfall enrichment works. It pays off when you have an operator who will spend real hours building tables, sequencing providers and maintaining them. If nobody on the team owns that build, the canvas sits underused while the subscription bills at a $185 per month floor month-to-month, or $167 per month if you commit annually.

What is the cheapest Clay alternative for verified B2B contacts? LeadSonar starts at $29 per month on the Starter plan with 50,000 lead credits, against Clay's published $185 per month Launch tier month-to-month ($167 per month if billed annually). Both month-to-month figures are the vendor's entry paid tier captured on July 20, 2026.

How many contacts does LeadSonar have? LeadSonar draws on a 120M+ B2B contact database, plus 45M+ B2C, with each contact resolved through the 18-to-20-source waterfall when you reveal it. Clay does not maintain a contact database of its own; it is a canvas that calls whatever providers you connect and sequence, so its coverage is whatever those providers return.

How accurate are B2B email finders? We mailed a real 37,040-contact LeadSonar list and only 0.55% bounced. That is measured 2026 production data with the sample size stated. Clay does not currently publish an accuracy figure of its own.

What is the best Clay alternative for agencies running outbound for clients? Agencies that run many client lists usually want throughput and predictable billing rather than a build surface. LeadSonar sustains 23.5 enriched profiles per second on a production 5,000-record run, bills per filled cell on CSV enrichment and refunds unfilled cells, and has handled a 220,000-record batch and a 293,000-record gap-fill as routine work.

How long does it take to set up Clay versus LeadSonar? Clay's value comes from building a table, choosing enrichment columns and sequencing providers, which is operator work measured in sessions rather than minutes. LeadSonar's setup is under 2 minutes: upload a CSV or describe the list in plain language to Sonya, and the cascade runs without configuration.

Does LeadSonar send cold email like a sequencer? No. LeadSonar finds, enriches and scores B2B contacts, then pushes them to the tool you already send with, including HubSpot, Salesforce, Instantly and Smartlead. Sending, warmup and sequencing stay with your outbound platform.

Which tool has better lead scoring, Clay or LeadSonar? Clay lets you build your own scoring logic in a column, which gives you complete control over the rules. LeadSonar returns an A/B/C/D grade, a 0-100 fit score and a written reason on every lead with no setup. On a 103,000-lead test, more than 91% of the leads LeadSonar scored came back above mid-tier quality (B grade or better). Based on 2026 LeadSonar production data.

Methodology

Competitor pricing. Every Clay figure on this page was captured from clay.com/pricing on July 20, 2026. On that page the plan cards display annual-billed monthly equivalents ($167 Launch, $446 Growth), while the FAQ on the same page states the month-to-month prices ("starting at $185/mo" Launch, "starting at $495/mo" Growth); both sets were captured on July 20, 2026 and this page uses the month-to-month figures for like-for-like comparison. No third-party review site, marketplace listing or community thread was used as a source for any number. Pricing in this category moves quarterly, so verify against the vendor's page before acting on a figure here.

LeadSonar pricing. The month-to-month figures ($29, $79, $199 and $499 per month) and the $29 and $79 month-to-month entry prices are published directly on leadsonar.io. The Pro $199 and Scale $499 month-to-month figures are derived from the site's stated 16% annual discount.

LeadSonar first-party data. Two production datasets, both processed in 2026:

Limitations. Neither sample is a random draw from the whole B2B universe; both are lists our customers built and mailed, so they carry the shape of those ICPs. In the 37,040-record export, four columns were empty or constant and were excluded as unusable. Company size was unknown on 33.6% of the 103,000-record sample. LeadSonar has never benchmarked Clay's data, and no figure on this page is a head-to-head accuracy test.

Normalization. Entry paid tier at month-to-month billing on both sides: LeadSonar Starter $29, Clay Launch $185. Annual-billed equivalents, where cited, are LeadSonar Starter $24 and Clay Launch $167. Excluded from the comparison: Clay's Enterprise tier, because it carries no published price, and any LeadSonar per-contact dollar figure, because our billing is per result and a blended per-lead cost is not something we publish.
